Answering the Call to Be Who You're Created to Be

Sometimes, a single quote can stop you in your tracks, resonating deep within. That's exactly what happened when I recently read an article in Uppercase magazine featuring the incredible fashion designer Yvonne Modupe Telford, founder of Kemi Telford. In discussing her Tate collection, she uttered words that many of us, especially as women, have likely felt:
"We get to a place in our lives where we're thinking. What do I want from life? I don't want to just be a mother. I don't want to just be a wife. I don't want to just be a woman. I want to be who I've been created to be."
This quote took me right back to a corporate workshop I attended during my IT career, where the concept of "losing your sparkle" was discussed. At the time, it hit me hard. I realised I had indeed lost my sparkle and desperately wanted it back. Taking the leap to leave IT and start Loopla was my way of reclaiming that, and for a long time, my sparkle absolutely shone again.
But lately, amidst the fullness and busyness of life, I've found myself feeling a little lost again, craving something more. My days are packed, my roles are many, but there's a quiet space within me that needs tending. Time just for me. Not for my career, not as a mum, not as a wife, not as a friend, not as a daughter. It's a deep craving to nurture the person I've been created to be, beyond all the labels.
While I haven't quite figured out exactly what that "something more" is for me yet, the act of defining what's missing and what I'm truly craving feels incredibly good. It may not happen anytime soon, but simply knowing I've identified it and am actively thinking about it brings a sense of comfort and direction. It's about filling a gap, even without knowing its exact shape. I've also recently discovered that while I love the flexibility of working from home, I've really missed having more in person human contact and connection. So, I suspect a big part of finding that "something more" will be through connecting with other people.
This journey of connecting with who you've been created to be often leads to a powerful shift in perspective. It challenges conventional notions of success. Suddenly, personal fulfilment and purpose become the true measures of accomplishment, even if they don't fit a traditional mould. Your success becomes measured by authenticity and joy in your expression, rather than just roles or traditional achievements. This internal clarity, this pursuit of what genuinely makes you feel alive, becomes a powerful force.
Yvonne's words are a powerful reminder to listen to that inner voice. It takes courage to acknowledge that longing and actively pursue "who you've been created to be." This is the process of stepping into your complete, authentic self and embracing all you're truly meant to be.
What does "being who you've been created to be" mean for you? Perhaps it's finally starting that personal project, signing up for that workshop, or simply giving yourself permission to explore a dormant desire. Whatever it is, honour that call. Your unique presence and sparkle are needed in the world.
Thank you Tammy, this post resonates so deeply with me.
Hi Tammy thanks for this post. It speaks to me.
Ask the question and listen for what comes.. without looking for an answer and having a particular outcome… just listen. So excited for you. Can’t wait to see where this takes you
I love this post! The quote captured exactly why I couldn’t let my little creative business go when I absolutely had every reason for it not to have room to exist amongst all the many roles I have that you’ve listed. I’ve also been feeling this sense of needing to dig deeper though on who my creative self is of late. Thank you for sharing x
